Change The World Wednesdays ...

I've been thinking (always a scary thing) ...

Reduce Footprints has over 200 public followers and over 30 email subscribers. That's a lot of people. And most of you have blogs, reaching a countless number of people. So ... what if we each did something ... something "green" ... the same something "green" ... during the same week ... and asked all of our readers to do the same?

Wow ... imagine the potential impact we could have.

How could this work? Well, here's my idea:

Let's create a chain, of sorts. Each Wednesday I'll post a green challenge. If you're willing to accept the challenge and accomplish the task within the next week, let me know in the comments section. Then, write a post on your blog, letting your readers know what the challenge is and ask them to also commit to the task.

Each Wednesday I'll post a new challenge and I'll also include a link to everyone who committed to the previous week's task.

So ... let's get started. Here is an easy challenge to get us going:

At least once this week, take a short shower ... time it to no more than 10 minutes.

If you accept the challenge, leave me your commitment in the comments section and be sure to leave your site's link. Then ... invite your readers to accept the challenge as well.

Together we can make a difference.

As always ... I would love to hear from you!

I'm game; I'll increase the challenge by employing the water pause feature on my shower head to save even more water. Although I am running late, and I won't be able to post the challenge until later this week.

I can do this one. I take navy showers as it is. That is where you use no water except to get wet and rinse. I will add this to my blog today. I just did an eco entry today.

Way ahead of you, I've gone super green by only using solar heated water to shower with until September.
Unfortunately I had a flat tire so I haven't been able buy the $10 or so in parts it would take to hook up the solar hot water heater so I've got about 1 minute of tolerable water temp.
I've detailed my building of a solar water set-up here.

I already take short showers! I used to love to take one before bed too but now make myself only do the one in the am.

I'm in, but I will have to post on my other blog(s) or as an appendix to my Word Wednesday posts. But, I post Wednesday posts on Tuesday nights to go live just after midnight, so will you post the challenge on Tuesday so we can all post our Change the World Wednesday post on Wednesdays?

What a fantastic idea, SF!

I'll play along though with this week's challenge although a sub-10 minute shower is as challenging as breathing to me and a lot of other people living in drought stricken SE Australia. We're encouraged to take 3 minute showers under a campaign to reduce water consumption to 155 litres per person per day. It's not enshrined in legislation or enforced, but just part of an ongoing push to encourage people to be water wise. Not that I needed the government to tell me to do it - I've always been pretty quick in the shower and water wise in general after growing up on a farm and experiencing drought first hand.

Your Change the World Wednesday idea reminds me of an article I read by Michael Pollan during the week - fairly old, so you might have read it already, but if not it's here:

Off to write a quick post for Gleeful... (BTW I fixed my feed! Yay!)

Greate,SF! I've jumped in.Taking a short shower seems tiny, but critical from the viewpoint of green action. Not with laziness,of course(LOL). I am thinking about twittering on Twitter(http://twitter.com/Chourou)about that as well as posting on my blog...

i guess i'm amazed that someone would take a shower over 10 minutes in the first place. my suggestion if you already take <10 minute showers? take fewer showers. unless you get grossly dirty every day, you don't need to shower every day and definitely don't need to wash your hair every day. and no i'm not a stinky, anti-deoderant girl, i just believe that people are overly obsessed at times - the Purell generation I suppose where everything is about anti-bacterial and anti-biotics, both which have been proven to be bad for us in that they prevent us from building up natural immunities. food for thought y'all... :)

I'm in - I LOVE long showers... they are my relaxation and peace to start the day. I am very aware of not wasting water however ... so I usually pull my 3 small kids in with me to play at my feet thinking that the fact they are not taking baths compensates for my slightly longer shower. Amazingly ... it is still relaxing!!

What a great idea! I'm interested to see what kind of challenges you will come up with each week. Hopefully this "chain reaction" will get more people thinking green!

What a nice way to spread the word. I'd imagine your Wednesday Green tips will reach many, many households, helping to continue to "Green" our planet. Kudos to you :)

I used to take bath twice a day, the second one around 10 pm beacause of the hot climate in my place. But now I take only one bath, not showers, and I do not find any discomfort by skipping the second bath. Now I use mugs-full of water and keep a count and this enables me to save considerable water that was otherwise going waste. Thanks.

This is a great idea. Sorry I missed the first challenge but I'll see what I can do for the rest.

This is a great idea! Projects that get people working together have a bigger impact.

I particularly like Change.org and Bloggers Unite because they let you create actions and events for cooperative effort.

This could be fun! Your post inspired "Shower With Your Garden" http://rewinn.blogspot.com/2009/06/shower-with-your-garden_14.html in which I link to your post.

(Basically, I suggest setting the tub in your plug so the rising water reminds you to keep the shower short, AND lets you re-use the shower water in your garden!)

I'll look for your next challenge Wednesday!

Great idea! Living on the farm conditioned me to take shorter showers and smaller baths. When you run out of water there, you are done! I can definitely commit to this, especially since we live in southern California now.

I was shocked; my normal shower is about eight minutues, and if I don't wash my hair I only spent four minutes.

I have been a fan of the Short Shower for a long time. I posted a link from my blog and added a web site where you can calculate your daily water used. I'll take this weeks challenge as a gentle reminder to keep up the good work (on my part). Can't wait for this weeks challenge.

A shorter shower, and definately no baths unless you need to, seems the most popular saving.

I invite you to visit the Green Planet blog some time: http://worldofcae.blogspot.com

I grew up in a culture not to waste water.

I work in a green school, and have just posted the above.

I had an environment lesson with the seniors. It started on the day when we had our green day, and I got the kids interested in water shortage in other parts of the world. Coincidentally we had a water cut, and all the kids were sent home.

The next day after your challenge, I challenge the kids to take 10 mins showers. I told them I would reward them if they had 4 out of 5, 10 mins showers.

A girl came out with her slogan," Don't waste water, it costs money , you know!!!"
They all came back saying they had 10 minutes showers, and I had to reward them out of my pocket.

I'm totally game! Ever since I took an Environmental Psych course last semester I've been trying my best to go as green as possible. I think this site is great and I'm definitely posting this challenge up on my blog! :)

WOW. this is an excellent idea, making a Green Goal each week, im 13 and im gonna try to do this as much as possible, you dont have much power when ur a kid, i have a blog but no one reads it so sorry i cant spread the news, good luck. ill be back on wednesday .

I do have one suggestion, its hard but possible! Try not to throw out anything for one whole week. recycling bottles cans and paper and plastic doesnt count, but try not to throw out anything as much as possible while at work, or bring all garbage home to see how much waste you really use each day. It works, my geography teacher is making us do this and its a pain in the neck but if u look at the difference at the end of the week, its stunning.
