Change The World Wednesdays

Last week's challenge was great! If your comments and posts were any indication, we, as a group, were able to significantly reduce the number of plastic bags being used. Congratulations to all of you!!

As I wandered around last week, reading your articles on plastic bags, I developed a new appreciation for your efforts. Talking about environmental issues, on non-environmental blogs, isn't always easy and, at times, generates some less than positive feedback. So ... thank you for taking a stand!

Here are the people who made this week's Honor Society ... and by the way ... I hope I haven't missed anyone. So many of you have posted about this and while I try to visit everyone ... it's tough to keep up with this growing group. So ... if I have missed your post, please accept my apologies ... and let me know ... I'll be sure to go back and read it and I'll include you next week. Okay, here we go:

Fabulous list, right? If you have an extra minute, be sure to click on some of their links ... there are some great posts on plastic bags.

Okay ... on to this week's challenge. This challenge was suggested by one of our bloggy friends, Yanic from Adventures into green:

For one full day this week, eat only local foods. No tropical fruits from across the world ... no veggies that traveled hundreds of miles to get to your table ... only locally grown foods (this includes meats, dairy products, etc., if you eat them).

OR, if you're already eating only local foods full time ... and may I say congratulations to that ... post one of your favorite "local food" recipes on your blog.

For the challenge "rules", click HERE!

Happy "local" eating, everyone!

  1. I posted about it this week on NatureWithMe as well: http://naturewithme.blogspot.com.

I also put it on my Blog Frog discussion forum.

  2. I'm about to complicate your life again...

What about a three-level challenge? You've basically started with a mid-range one, and last week people stepped it up because they were already doing that thing. This week, I'm looking at the challenge and thinking, there is no way I could do this on our almost-nonexistent budget. I'm not sure I could do a whole meal local, let alone a whole day. But I can do individual items, and I do as much of those as possible.

If you were to list multiple levels of challenge, you could just add the level to the person's name and blog for your honor roll. A little more work, but it would probably boost participation even more. Different people have gone farther distances in different issues.

  3. Hi,SF.Beans, melons, NORI or dried pressed laver. These are well known local foods of the prefecture I' m living in now.

Green action seems to be challenging a bit for me, and I've struggled to accomplish no-plastic bag-life.I've done that, at least when shopping....

  4. Here is my blog sharing post!

You know I'm in... I'll make sure and write up a few recipes. We've chosen sunday as our local day. I'll post a run down of our findings and meals and let you know.

I hope this challenge won't scare too many people off. There is so much amazing local treasures out there.

    Good luck to all!

  5. Great idea, and SO up my alley. I posted on my blog, and on the eat local New England blog I write for!

It's funny, especially during the summer, I'd say I eat about 75% locally. That last 25% is the hard part :) Looking forward to the challenge!

  6. This one is hard for me. I live in Arizona and we don't have the best climate for everything we eat. I do try though, and I pick products from the closest state possible. We do have some good local produce and we eat more Bison than beef, all which come from Arizona. Unfortunately (but not totally bad) I get a lot of stuff organically grown from California. I also stay away from things listed as "Product of USA". Not that I have anything against the east coast but it's a long trip. LOL

  7. OK - I'm in!! Just got my CSA pick up so thats a good start.

  8. great challenge this week but you need to define what is local - do you mean within 100 miles? your state? your region? i would recommend people start out with their region and narrow it down when possible to your state or 100 miles.

  9. I can do this! The farmers market is not that far from us. Can I do this on a day when my meat eating vegi hating husband isent home? LOL

  10. Wow. Toughie this week! How are you defining 'local'? I try to eat Australian produce but is that local enough?

  11. I just updated my site with this challenge.

I'm a realist and I know we can't fully participate in this challenge, but we're going to make an effort with fruits, veggies & eggs. With two little ones with little kid pallets, it's really hard.

Let's just see how we do!

  13. Excellent challenge! Coincidentally, I've been working on a post about our local farm share from General George S. Patton's farm, Green Meadows, that started last week! You put a fire under my butt to download the photos I took and get it online:

    http://holdfastseeker.blogspot.com/2009/06/eating-locally-csa-farm-share.html

We're lucky that we have so much locally grown food available but it's still a challenge even in this productive season. My family will do our best! I'm already slipping up by drinking coffee as I type this, although Barbara Kingsolver's family allowed themselves coffee in Animal, Vegetable Mineral so did I fail? -kate

  14. This is hard too for me, I am married to this very China man for 30 years. He eats rice, and we don't grow rice in NZ. May be I will persuade him to eat potatoes for a change.

I do grow my own veges, and am now experimenting on growing my own mushrooms.

  17. Last weeks challenge was a perfect reminder for me. I have a closet full of totes and always forget them. Now they sit waiting by the back door! Thanks for entering my Birthday Challenge too!

  18. After leaving a comment earlier I had to post a blog on this subject. I do support our local growers but in the end I want organic.

  19. We have a grocery called "Hillers Market" in Michigan and they have special labels all over the store for products that come from Michigan. I really appreciate this and I do go out of my way to use those products.

  20. Nice challenge! and very timely, as our building has just started participation in an Urban Agriculture/Rooftop Garden experiment. While we will probably never be able to meet the Eat Local challenge from our own roof alone, we are not alone! Imagine swapping our tomatoes for eggs from the next building over ;-)

A dream, yes, but a fun one to work on. Never forget the fun!

  22. My local Farmers' Market is my best source for fresh produce and a few other items.

This is something that was planned last month but I and other bloggers are posting photos of our local produce stands, farmers' markets, and similiar venues. I did a little tie-in to this challenge.

I hope everyone will come over and take a look. It will be up all weekend so if you would like to participate just leave a comment on my blog with the link.

Be sure to visit the other blogs listed as well. Here is the link http://squirrelqueen2.blogspot.com/2009/06/farmers-market.html

  23. Hey Small Footprints,

I missed this as I'm still trying to catch up with my e-mails and everything. I think this is a great challenge. You're doing some really great things on Reduce Footprints, as you always have. Hope everything is good. Looks like this challenge was a success.
