Hi Everyone! Happy "Change The World Wednesday".
One of the goals of these weekly challenges is to get a lot of people trying the same "green" activity during the same week. So, everyone is asked to spread the word. For most of us that means blogging about it and perhaps telling our friends and family. For one of our bloggy friends, however, it means creating a new blogcatalog group and working tirelessly to bring newcomers to the "fold". TC of Live Smart started a Change The World Group on blogcatalog. He's already signed up a bunch of people who, hopefully, will be joining us in our weekly efforts.
But that's not all that TC has done. Realizing that linking to a blog helps to raise that blog's ranking and increase traffic, he took our list of participants ... our "Honor Society" ... and re-posted it on his blog. So, not only did participants get featured here and their articles get stumbled ... they also got featured on TC's blog.
Our weekly challenges are quickly becoming a "social network" ... so not only are we doing a great thing for the earth ... we're promoting ourselves and each other. A huge thanks goes out to TC and his great efforts. His article is featured in this week's Honor Society so ... be sure to check it out. And, stop by the new group!
Alright ... without further ado, our Honor Society:

Okay ... are you ready for a new challenge? This one combines a couple of suggestions made by amybyrd21 (aka waylandcook) at The Wayland Springs Cook. Here you go:
This week, turn your trash bin into the smallest container in the house by starting a compost bin and/or a recycle bin.
Or, if you're already a composter and recycler, write a post about it. Include information on what works for you and what doesn't, tips on how to be successful at it, and perhaps why it's preferable over sending stuff to a landfill.
Remember ... write an article about this challenge (and let me know that you have) and the article will get stumbled. Participate in any way (and again, let me know) and you'll be included in the Honor Society ... and who knows where that will lead. If you are a Twitterer (or is that Tweeter), tweet about it using the tag #changetheworldwed.
On your mark ... get set ... GO!!
We're changing the world ... one challenge at a time!

Thank you for the support. It is my pleasure to help spread the word. I am glad to be a part of this movement because your doing a wonderful service to us and the planet. Here is my post for this weeks challenge. http://livesmartbook.blogspot.com/2009/08/recycling-made-easy-with-earth911com.html
ReplyDeleteLife's a little hectic for me with school starting in a week, so composting will have to wait until things settle down--I'll let you know if I do start one.
ReplyDeleteHowever, my family has recycled for many years. The city used to allow us to use these blue bags to put all mixed recyclables in. We'd put the bags in the regular trash can and they'd be sorted at the refuse station.
Now with all the budget cuts, they've asked us to separate them into type, which makes it a little more time-consuming and probably deters some from even recycling in the first place.
But once you get into the routine of remembering that anything recyclable should never end up in the trashcan, it isn't hard to recycle. It's all a matter of getting in the habit.
Cool and noble goals I see with this Weekly challenge..I will post a message for you to my 10,502 Tweeters right now...Have an awesome day...

My family is on a mission to not only help the planet but also reduce the cost of utilities. With that said we currently have one trash bin outside but 3 recycling bins. One for plastic, aluminum and cardboard. It is amazing how much trash we cut down on by recycling. I take approximately 4 bags a month to the landfill but make multiple trips to the recycling center. As for composting...I just recently started my compost heap. Recycling does work, it is easy to do and in the long term it will save money. Heck, we make money from the cans we turn in. Oh, we also recycle paper and newspaper. Once through the shredder and you can get a lot in a single trash bag.
ReplyDeleteA lot of work and engineering goes into designing a landfill but if we act carelessly they will fill up quickly and you can't simply build another one. There are regulations in place that limit where a landfill can be built. We need to be smart and understand that through recycling we can only improve our situation and preserve our resources.
Place a profile here with my partner and friend Arrianna Huffington at HuffPost social News and let's fan and friend each other there..I'm friends w/Arriana, Alec Baldwin, Don sutherland etc...

Good challenge and I hope to get the word out. I have recycled as it has been made available to me. Recently though, I have been trying to recycle at work, as well. I feel I can make the time and it is worth the effort. Plus, it's less trash to haul out at the end of the night.
ReplyDeleteBe well
Thanks for you post.
ReplyDeleteI recycle any and everything I can think of. We have (4) recycle bins for glass, aluminum and plastic, plus two containers for paper and cardboard.
I did a post on Aug 4th on recycling and you can find it at;

I also posted this week on your topic from last week, and a thank you to all the ones listed above in your post. I sent out a tweet too.
Love your work and keep it up, Shari

Glad things are going well and enjoy your posts on twitter. I'll put your blog on my facebood page as blog of the day and I'll see if I can't put something on sidebar of my blog Joe Todd
ReplyDeleteYour blog is "blog of day" on my facebook page. and did a blog post hope you get a chance to check it out. Wish I had your energy Thanks Joe Todd
ReplyDeleteMy posts are up on both blogs. I gave results of last week's challenge there as well.
ReplyDeleteWe compost daily, and I have written posts about it, so I will have to write a new post for follow-up. Most recently, we have added chicken droppings to our compost, so that is new...

i want to thankyou once again for your support in my time of need
hope to see you at the bus soon
love peace and light to all on this wonderful day xx
Are you making a spreadsheet or list of all projects/past projects in order? You should, and then you can post it in file format for participants to visit, and you could publish the book: Change The World One Wednesday At a Time.
ReplyDeleteI have a compost pile. We recycle those items that are accepted in our area. Here is my article on bunches of things you can do to shrink your garbage footprint:

Hey SF..Things are really rolling. I tweaked my post a little to add your Change The World button. Here is the updated version.
ReplyDeleteChange The World
We reuse the plastic boxes our spinach and spring mix comes in as the kitchen counter compost collector. We've composted since we moved into our first apartment, and when my now husband moved into his first solo apartment I started his recycling corner (there wasn't pick up so he had to haul it).
ReplyDeleteMy goal is to start a worm bin so I can have nice handy potting soil.
I'm in! Thanks for doing this. It is fun to be tossed a challenge, particularly when it can lead to an "organic" movement that can do a tremendous amount of good. I'll do what I can to help you keep this going.
ReplyDeleteI've added a post on my blog for this week. Here's the link:

I just thought I'd leave you a comment (this is Dora Renee' Wilkerson from Blog Catalog.) Everyone likes to get comments.
ReplyDeleteLike I was telling you I wouldn't say my family is "green" but we do some things that a lot of people may feel are green.
I'll post something on my blog in support of your site the next couple of weeks (right now I am so busy that I shouldn't even be on the computer right now. I still wanted to at least leave a comment and tell you that I did enjoy reading your site today.) :)
Well I better get off here. I have 13 dairy goats to bring in and milk before I get to making dinner.

I am fortunate to live in a place where they offer monthly trash pickup as an option, but frankly I don't even need it monthly, even with a roommate! Paying close attention to packaging, knowing what's recyclable, and utilizing my compost bin is huge. If the packaging is not recyclable, don't buy it. Buy the most easily recycled/compostable products. And show love to the compost bin - a huge reason I think my garden is so happy!
ReplyDeleteI admit though there are things I wish were easier to recycle - hello, LIDS/TOPS! Imagine how many miles and tons there are just of those alone... I can recycle them at my city recycler, but the fact is they need to make this easier for Joe Bob Recycler as well.
Packaging is the worst though - what I've come to think about is, things taking so much energy and materials to be used for seconds or minutes...so people, think about that Starbucks and bring your own mug. If you're at a cafe, make sure if you're staying there that you ask them to serve it in their dishes not in a to-go container that will get tossed in minutes - often they have this option (just like how all stores have paper bags but automatically put it in plastic).
Note on garbage: use one big bag, not multiple small bags. Use recycled content bags. Start somewhere, and build your green habits from there.
Kudos again for a great blog.
Hey, I am new to your blog here but I am loving your Wednesday challenge. We jsut did a blog post weeks ago about recycling in an apartment. Our trash can now only gets emptied once a week rather than four times a week. Great challenge to get people to come together. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI look forward to next weeks challenge.
:)
I have never composted my household waste, but with the challenge..it makes me encourage to do composting!

I've FIANLLY done a post on composting! you got me offmy butt to finish the one I started months ago! It's about composting and other eco-friendly things to do in your backyard. excellent challenge and easy for us since we already compost and recycle everything!

If you ship books (and probably other stuff) you can use materials that would otherwise go into your recylcing bin, and that hopefully go into a recylcing bin once they are delivered. This week's challenge got me to finally get around to writing up my method: http://rewinn.blogspot.com/2009/08/carbon-neutral-book-shipping.html and I'm eager to hear about yours!
