Welcome to Change The World Wednesday (CTWW)! If you're new to our weekly challenges, click on our brand new, beautiful logo above for a little information on how this weekly event works.
By the way, as I mentioned in an earlier post (but it's definitely worth mentioning again), our lovely new logo came to us compliments of "Art Ist" at One A Day. I'm a bit prejudice but ... I think his creations are fabulous ... so if you have a minute, stop by his place. Thanks, "Art"!
Last week's challenge was terrific! As I traveled around the blogosphere, I read many wonderful posts on recycling and composting. If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend that you take a moment and do a little reading. Congratulations to our Honor Society for a job well done! Now, here they are:

Okay ... are you ready for another? Here you go:
This week's challenge comes from one of our new bloggy friends, Millenniumhealth, at ... well ... Millenniumhealth. It's an easy activity and once again shows us that small actions matter ... especially when we all do them. Here it is:
This week, put your computer to sleep or set it to hibernate when it's not in use. If you need help in doing this, check out these sites:
Use Standby and Hibernate
Manually Put Your Computer Into Hibernation
Or ...
Typically, if you're already doing the first part of the challenge, I ask you to write about it on your blog. This week, however, we're going to do something different. If you are already in the habit of putting your computer to sleep or turning it off when you're not using it, look around your home and identify one other "sneaky" area that uses electricity. Come back here and, in the comments section, tell us what it is and how you'll either eliminate it or reduce it.
So ... what do you think? Are you up for it? Need a little more motivation? Well, our friend Thomas, over at Renewables At Home, has written something just for you. It's called "Don't Pee In The Hallway" ... I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
Don't forget ... CTWW now offers you a bunch of ways to promote your site and raise your rankings in the blogosphere. Check out our Tips and Ideas HERE for details.
That's it for this week! Thanks, everyone!
WE'RE CHANGING THE WORLD ... ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME
i should ask hubby to do this challenge instead. he's the one who forgets to put his computer to sleep when he goes to sleep!! most of the time i have to do it for him! HMMMM ....
ReplyDeleteAlready do that with computer. I say turn temp down on electric hot water heater (just a couple degrees is ok) turn way down when on vacation. Post in sidebar of blog Everyone have a great day
ReplyDeleteI started to do this because of this challenge...I admit it! Today I completely shut it down after closing every site in the browser and also cleaned all the cookies and cache....I feel better already!
ReplyDeleteThis should make the laptop run more efficiently today!

this gives me somethng to thin k about.
ReplyDeleteKelli
I did a post about this a few months ago:
ReplyDeletehttp://holdfastseeker.blogspot.com/2009/05/one-thing-for-planet-unplug-your-wall.html
Not only do wall warts suck power but so do things like stereos (notice how preset radio stations stay set even when you turn off your stero, there's a power drain there). Installing a simple power strip that you can turn off many applicances at once will solve this problem and save electricity :) of course you lose your presets but that's a small hassel for such a big gain!

Great challenge SF, I have responded on Tomus Arcanum and posted a little addition using your refernce to Don't pee in the Hall way. I have linked bot and stumbled. I hope that is what I am supposed to do for CTWW.

Ha! Well a month ago my 10 year old purple iMac kicked the bucket and then a week later I'm out of work, so I resort to internet via my cell phone or here at the library until I'm back to work. I am getting the gift of a Netbook from my family, thank goodness, but when I'm back on my feet it'll be a yummy new Mac laptop at the highest energy efficiency possible :)
ReplyDeleteNote to others: turn off your computer when you leave work at the end of the day too! :)
Great challenge! I posted it on my blog : http://greentobe.blogspot.com/2009/08/change-world-wednesday-challenge-let.html
ReplyDeleteHere are extra ways I save a bit of energy around the house :
* I have all my aquariums on timers so that they turn off automatically when we are not home to do so.
* As I take my shower, I gradually reduce the hot water so that the temperature gently decreases and I use less energy heating my water tank.
* When we have smaller stuff to cook and bake, we use the more efficient toaster oven instead of the conventionnal oven.
* Before the computer even goes into sleep mode, we turn off the monitor because the monitor takes up even more electricity than the computer does.
Wow. SF- pretty soon your gonna have to outsource. Me too. Here is the post containing the shout to the Honor Society on Blog Catalog. Honor Society Post on Blog Catalog
ReplyDeleteHere is my post this week. Ten Ways To Conserve Energy At Home
We always use the sleep mode or turn the computer off when not in use and have done that for about 3 years now. We put dimmer switches on our main lights and keep them at very low wattage the majority of the time. We take shorter showers and have the thermostat on our hot water heater reduced 20degrees to 120. We also adjusted our fridge temp. up a bit. We open windows at night and in the morning and keep the A/C set at 77 during the day and 76 at night if we need it. Thanks again. TTYL
Hello, I had to leave a comment for you because you have such an incredible blog with an eye-catching and creative header shot! Beautiful pictures and writing; I've been really absorbed reading your posts. Thank you for sharing them and best wishes....
ReplyDeleteTurning off your computer at night has another benefit, you never know who might use it when you sleep.
ReplyDeleteThis article shows what could happen.
http://www.examiner.com/x-2113-Phoenix-Pet-News-Examiner~y2009m8d8-Man-blames-cat-for-jail-time
I'll put a post tying these two things together on my blog.
I'm in...and already put the post "Change The World Wednesday (CTWW) Challenge and Trend Energy Saving" http://blogodril.blogspot.com/2009/08/change-world-wednesday-ctww-challenge.html.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am already in the habit of putting my computer to sleep or turning it off when I’m not using it. So, I will show energy saving of our "tropical" house. :-D
Great challenge!, thank Small Footprints..
Not been on blogger for a couple of weeks! So i'll be sure to have a proper go at this switching-things-off-task!
ReplyDeleteI already switch my computer off when i leave the house, even if just for and hour...but I quite often leave it on when i decide to watch Tv or read! Not from now on though!
I can definitely do this one. I've been trying to remember to turn off my computer and unplug the cord at night. I'm a little behind on the challenges, but I FINALLY dropped off my donation (yarn & fabric) to a wonderful non-profit http://suerockoriginals.blogspot.com . Check out their blog if you have a moment. Thank you for the wonderful challenges. You keep us on our green toes!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I make a point to unplug "sneaky" electricity users in our home...the biggest consumer for us was our TV. We cut our electricity bill significantly by unplugging our TV (dvd player, apple tv, etc.) when not in use.
ReplyDeleteWe typically hibernate our computers when not in use, but God willing I will be more diligent this week!
I just found your blog! I love how it is interactive and action based.
ReplyDeleteOur computer automatically hibernates and we generally shut it off at night. I'll keep it in my mind to make sure we do, though.
ReplyDeleteI also usually unplug my lamp/record player cord (gotta love extension cords) if I'll be gone for a day or two. I'll keep that one in mind this week.
Maybe I'll unplug the television...may anger my sister who is addicted to that darn thing, but I'll try to replug it before she notices :)
We are so broke, we've already whittled down electrical use as much as practical here. So, I wrote a blog post anyhow, because I think the topic of energy efficiency could use more attention.

I'm game! I've posted about this challenge and last week's earlier today.
