Change The World Wednesday

How did you do on last week's challenge? Did you manually put your computer to sleep or did you change your settings so that it will, forever more, slumber when not in use? I've set my settings to hibernate after 10 minutes of non-use ... so that I never have to think about it. Be sure to go back and read some of the comments from that challenge ... there are some good ideas on other ways to reduce our energy usage.

Let's start with a few quick reminders:
  • The "rules" and a list of all challenges can be found HERE.
  • If you write an article about our challenge, it will get stumbled (by me and hopefully by others as well).
  • Leave a comment on this challenge, agreeing to participate and you'll be added to the Honor Society.
  • Post the Honor Society, along with links, to your blog/site and all of our rankings with improve.
  • If you're a Twitter member, pass the word using the hashtag #ctww.
  • And, hop over to Blog Catalog and join Change The World.
So ... ready to take a look at this week's Honor Society? Here they are:

As usual ... an incredible group with wonderful posts! Thanks to all of you!

Okay ... are you ready? Let's get busy:

For one week, say "NO" to polystyrene foam (commonly known as Styrofoam). This means ... don't buy it (no Styrofoam coolers, cups or toys), don't use it and don't buy anything that comes in it. At restaurants, should you have leftover food to take home, ask the server to put it in something other than Styrofoam. At fast-food establishments, refuse to buy any products which come in it. Just Say No!

Or ...

If your life is already Styrofoam free, then write a post about why Styrofoam is so bad for the environment.

That's it for this week!

WE'RE CHANGING THE WORLD ... ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME!

  2. We do live mostly styrofoam free but this will definitely be a challenge for us this week since we are leaving on vacation in just 2 days... vacations = eating out = lots and lots of to go containers! But I'm ready!

    Here is my post!

  5. I don't use it at all, but I will blog about it in my friday post. I can't believe they still make coolers out of that stuff! LOL

  6. I am amazed that there are still styrofoam cups, etc., out there and never use it myself. However we should all think about what we do with packing foam, peanuts, etc., that is the same material. Peanuts can be bagged up and delivered to your local UPS store for re-use, but the block styrofoam is challenging. In PDX, there are 2 facilities that accept it for recycling so I usually just store it up til I have enough to warrant a car trip with other hard-to-recycle items.

My other comment would be related to other types of cups. Think about how much energy it takes to make disposable cups - bring your own to the cafe! And if you forget, bring the whole thing home - the paper cup can be rinsed out and tossed in with your paper recycling, and the plastic lids, while not curbside recyclable, can be saved to take with other plastics to the recycling station. And if you are at a cafe, don't let them give your coffee to you in a to-go cup, as most have regular coffee mugs and glasses available :)

  8. Yes there are still styrofoam cups here in York, Pa.....I see then every day....so many people sell them daily.....I won't buy any more!

  9. We use very little styrofoam here, mostly stuff like cups from places that offer nothing else. I don't buy it if there is a better option. So I wrote this blog post about the drawbacks of styrofoam and alternatives to using it:

  11. This challenge made me realize how much more fun it is to talk with the staff at the deli counter as they wrap my stuff in paper, instead of just grabbing something prepacked, which is usually on a styro tray.

I haven't figured out yet what to do about computer packaging but I love the challenge to Just Say No to Styro

  12. New idea: if we add "Change the World Wednesdays" to our individual blog tag lists, we can facilitate looking at we've already published and perhaps increase interest by casual visitors.

  13. A very good challenge for us because here in Spain loads of supermarket stuff is packaged on polystyrene trays - veg, cold meats, raw meats even cheese. We can avoid all of it by shopping in the markets or local small shops, which is what we should do more of anyway!

mine is late. I visited Singapore and Malaysia. They use a lot of styrofoam over there.

  15. Change the world Wed. sounds good however, the world was here when we arrived and will be here when we are gone. The intent to improve the world is noble, but be aware of those who promise improvements; it may be at the price of mankind. This would leave only the powerful and the slaves. Which one do you think you would be?
