Let's just jump right into this week's challenge, shall we? Here we go:
Two of our bloggy friends, Amy Byrd of The Wayland Springs Cook and Marcy of Cooking Rut (both wonderful chefs), suggested this:
This week, for the entire week, refuse to use paper towels. Yep, 7 days ... no paper towels.
Or ...
If you never use paper towels, please write a post about how you get by without them.
This sounds easy enough ... but I'm guessing that it's going to be a real challenge for some ... especially when many are in the habit of just reaching for that roll on the counter. I'm also guessing that you are totally up for it!
Speaking of "up for it", a whole group of people were up for last week's challenge to plant something. I hope you'll drop by and visit members of our Honor Society and see what they were busy doing last week:

Sinclair at Nature With Me and at Sharing Our Gifts
Last week I totally missed Sinclair's efforts! Sinclair is one of our true honorees because she posts about our challenges each week on not one but two and often three blogs. She shares her thoughts and ideas ... and I recently noticed that she has included a special section on her sidebar for the honor society. She goes way beyond the call of duty to spread the green word and to give every participant a link.
So please accept my apology, Sinclair!
Let's pick up the posts we missed:
Nature With Me
Sharing Our Gifts
If I have missed your post, or another post that you've come across, please let me know ... I definitely want to give every participant a mention.
As a reminder ... I'm stumbling articles written about our challenges and I'll also twitter about them. And if you are a member of Twitter, I'd sure appreciate a tweet about our challenges using the hashtag #CTWW.
By the way, I received another wonderful suggestion for how we can improve these weekly challenges and make them easier for people to access. Elizabeth Barrette (who you'll find in the Honor Society above) offers this: "What I have done that's worth an extra mention is to list all the new CTWW posts at the end of my original feature post about this project. That's hugely useful because it's the page that keeps getting the most StumbleUpon hits. So other folks might consider creating a CTWW "landing page" on their blogs." Thanks, Elizabeth ... that's a great idea!
All of the challenges, past and present, as well as the rules, tips and ideas, can always be found by clicking the Change The World Wednesday banner in the sidebar.
That's it for this week!

http://littlegreenblog.com/blog/global-events-blog/change-the-world-wednesday-week-2/
I will write about it. I never use papertowels, and I cant remember the last time I did! LOL
ReplyDeleteInteresting challenge. Thanks. Sorry I have been absent a few weeks, but ready to reinvolved myself with your weekly challenges.
ReplyDeleteBest--Harmony

thanks for stopping by prissy green and telling me about this. i am starting now. I am hiding mine in another room. and with the mister out of town it will be a piece of cake. it is when he gets back that will be the challenge!
ReplyDeleteAs a mother of an infant paper towel use doesn't appall me as much as the ubiquitous baby wipes that every mother seems to whip out at the hint of a speck of food on their baby's face.
ReplyDeleteWe carry a dishtowel in our diaper bag and use that instead. It gets some odd looks from other moms but it works great and you can throw it in the wash.
I admit I keep paper towels around the house, but I think it takes us about six months to go through a roll, we have a full drawer of dish towels that get far more use.
Excellent challenge! I will update my side bar! sorry I didn't update last week, we were on vacation dodging sharks on the outer Cape (and not using paper towels! :) -kate
Excellent. Thanks for the mention. It's a struggle but I'm up for the challenge. Will post about this tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteAww man..That is gonna be a hard one. I think I could do it but my wife may be another story. We will work on it. This is a good way to get her more committed to other sustainable activities.
ReplyDeleteYeah...count me in! I have lots of linen rags I _should_ use instead of paper towels, and some days I even remember, but not near often enough. I'm onboard for the next week at least, and I'll see if I can continue once the week's over.
ReplyDelete(Yes, they really are linen. What? I sew a lot... :)
A reader in one of the forums I belong to has an interesting problem concerning this challenge. She makes bacon every morning for her breakfast. She says the bacon thing is non-negotiable. She uses paper towels to cook them.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have an idea of how she might cook them without the paper towels? I don't use a microwave and haven't got a clue!
Thanks!
SF
I vote for no paper towels and no microwave (I don't use one either, nor do I eat pork). But there are special microwave dishes with grooves especially for bacon that act as a drop pan...maybe that would work?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the extra special mention today...I enjoy the challenges, and it is little enough to post and share links on my blog. Have a wonderful week.
I don't use them never have! When my mom comes to town she always brings a little gift of kitchen hand towles that either match my kitchen or have a holiday theme! Mom never used paper towels either! I have tons of hand towels: 4th of July, Easter, Christmas, every occasion under the sun! LOVE them!

i will post on the blog and festival
keep up the amazing work my friend
and love to art
yout two daft friends
Great comments already...I have not used paper towels in almost a year and now don't even miss them. My dishtowel takes care of everything for me and I use cloth napkins at meals. The only interesting transition for me was when I tried to butter my first pan without one, but soon learned that a wee bit of oil and my (clean) hands did just fine. As for bacon? sit it on a plate, let it drip, then shake it off. Like pizza, you're eating grease no matter what. Focus on making sure that bacon is not from factory-farmed pigs first...!
ReplyDeleteThis one ranks up there with the Styrofoam one. I forgot to post on that one but here is my post for this week!

I have to admit that I didn't last on this challenge. We broke down and used some this week. We will work on it. What a rain out this week in town. I'd say it's time for sunshine again. Hope the weekend is treating you well.
ReplyDeleteI haven't got through the whole week either, but I've learned an awful lot about my habits and have managed to reduce my usage
ReplyDeleteI'll be posting about it tomorrow!
I thought this would be easy but then I went to the gym and started
ReplyDeleteHankerin' for an Alternative

@Kate - I remember distinctly as one of 10 kids, someone going to my mom at the Fireman's Picnic for a clean diaper with which to sponge off someone who'd gotten a bump on their head; her exact words were, "We cam to you Doris because we knew you'd have a wet diaper".
All the adults laughed and we kids went "Hunh?"
About bacon - our bacon cooking has change *a lot* once we started getting the top-quality stuff from a local meatcutter. It turns out that bacon does not HAlf to be 50% fat; it costs a little more to have the real lean stuff but you end up with a LOT more, and no need to deal with the grease.
