Welcome! If you are new to our challenges, please click HERE.
Let's jump right into a new challenge, shall we? Here it is:
This week only use reusable mugs/glasses. Yep ... for seven whole days, refuse anything that isn't reusable. Bring your own mug to your favorite coffee shop ... haul your own glass to the soda dispenser at the corner convenience store ... carry your own mug/glass to fast-food restaurants. If a drink comes in something that will be tossed out ... either don't buy it or use your own vessel.
So ... are you up for this challenge? Hopefully, we'll reduce a lot of waste this week!
Last week's challenge asked us to read food labels and refuse to buy things with unhealthy ingredients. Something interesting that I noticed is that the closer one gets to the center of the store, the more likely the food labels will contain a long, unhealthy list of ingredients. Shopping the perimeter of the store is where one will usually find the most natural and healthy foods.
Here's this week's Honor Society:
Harmony wrote a brilliant article. In the opening section she says: "Imagine. A world free of pesticides..." And then: "Imagine--taking care of yourself..." It's a wonderful post ... I hope you take the time to read it!
Kate stopped by and asked "What about genetically modified food?" After reading her article Genetically modified food proven to cause organ and endocrine damage, I'm adding that to my list of foods to stay away from. Kate also wrote a post about how one company silently changed the ingredients in a product, adding unhealthy levels of sugar. You can read that article HERE. It reminds us that we can't just read the labels once and assume that they'll be consistent from then on ... we have to always read the labels.
Ange joined us saying that her family has been doing this for some time. My mouth watered at the thought of her wholemeal flour frozen blueberry muffins.
Green Gal initially took on the challenge ... she'd been planning to pay more attention to these kinds of things so our challenge was timely for her. But then ... Noah's Bagels & Starbucks flavored drinks diverted her attention. That's okay, Green Gal ... these challenges are all about awareness.
Mrs. Green wrote an article entitled "A week of reading food labels". By the way, I'd like to congratulate Mrs. Green for winning 2nd place in the Green Web Awards under the category of Green Living Advice Sites for her other blog ... My Zero Waste. The competition was fierce and truly, she missed 1st place by only a few votes. Congrats Mrs. Green!
Aine Butler-Smith joined us and asked an interesting question ... "Does eating out at a restaurant count?" So I ask you ... when you eat out, do you choose your meal based on health, nutrition and the environment ... or do you throw caution to the wind?
Eemilla dropped in ... always great to have you with us, Eemilla!
EcoGrrl took the challenge ... and decided to focus on eating out. Her plan is to eat vegetarian in restaurants to minimize the likelihood of toxic ingredients. By the way ... Congratulations to EcoGrrl for winning her Farmer's Market's slogan contest! WhooHoo!!
Danny from Conservation Nation join us and said "I'd rather eat something with things I can read and understand." I second that!
Mommy Tyme accepted the challenge and she passed the word HERE. She also offered us another great tip: "Instead of throwing out those old sweaters (the ones that are past the donation point) or shirts..One thing that we do is cut them into thin strips and hang them on the trees. ... The birds will have them all built into their nests in the next few months." That's a great tip!
Rewinn took the challenge and wrote a wonderful article entitled "Food Rules, Omnivore Drools". In this article he includes a "New Rule: Any foodstuff that has to tell you what it is for, is not something you want to put in your body." Brilliant!
What A Card joined us and wrote a fabulous article about SOLE Food. SOLE stands for Sustainable, Organic, Local, and Ethical ... and What A Card shares, with us, how those ideals work in our food selections.
As always, the Honor Society did a great job!
I've Stumbled and Tweeted your articles!
Thanks, Everyone!
WE'RE CHANGING THE WORLD ... ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME!

ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Thanks for putting forth the challenge.

Gosh, fab challenge. I've just written up about it and found some scary statistics in my research. 23 billion disposable coffee cups used every year in America alone...

Thanks for the congrats on the Green Web awards and thanks for another great challenge which will no doubt raise alot of awareness about this issue.
Good challenge. I have been trying to use my own coffee mug, lately, but will definitely give it a go!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice comments on my blog regarding last week's challenge. I appreciated them!
Our local Sherpa-owned coffee shop encourages you to bring your own cup by giving you a discount. problem is getting my forgetful husband to remember to bring one! I usually just make a pot at home but he likes to go in and chat with the townspeople on his way to work...maybe I'll start leaving empty mugs in his car? :)
ReplyDeleteThis one will be easier for me, as I already abide by this most days. I will discuss this in the same post about my challenge with last week's sometime this week. Thanks!
ReplyDeletebrilliant challenge my friend
ReplyDeletebut i bet i get some looks with my wee tatty cup
i have linked to the post
love and peace afrom me and Mel
ps thanks for your comments
I just stumbled across your site and love the whole idea of it. Thanks for this challenge. Tomorrow is my Starbucks day, so I will be sure to bring my own mug. Why didn't I think of this before??
ReplyDeleteI have a reuseable mug that I use everyday. Maybe once or twice a month I get a coffee at Burger King, then I use the paper cup. But that's not too often. I also recycle can's and bottle's.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of your site and I'm sure I'll be back.
Good basic challenge that makes a big difference. I have three travel mugs - one by the front door, one on my desk at work, and another in my bag. Just like cloth grocery bags, it's a matter of creating a habit.
ReplyDeleteAnother step? Think about what other things you can buy in your own container - i.e. the bulk aisles (whether you are reusing the same plastic bag over and over, or filling up a glass jar (and subtracting it's weight).
Taking this concept a big step further? Don't drink soda. The chemical stuff that comes out of convenience stores and other 'fountains' are hard on the system. Put the Diet Coke down! :)
And a way to make up for 'cup transgressions' (smile)? Don't throw it in the garbage! Take your Starbucks cup (and plastic lid) home, wash out the cup and put it in your paper recycling. The plastic lid can be washed out and saved in your scrap plastic (NOT curbside) for dropoff at your local recycling center (the one near me takes all plastic 1-7 so as soon as I have a bag full, I drop it off - this is most frequently comprised of lids and caps which most curbside don't take.
So after my wordiness (what's new), I guess I don't have much to do as this is one that I've incorporated into my life. So my focus will be on educating others about this, and spreading the word about the Reduce Footprints Diva ;)
Great challenge,
ReplyDeleteI am on holidays, and when we go to theme parks, we bring our own food and drinks to the theme parks. I is heavy to lug them, but we know are are drinking clean water and eating our own healthy food.
My son doesn't like drinking water from plastic bottles, he drinks water from his own recycled glass bottle.
By coincidence, I just posted on using glass.

This is a great idea. The only place I can think of that I drink from a plastic cup is the drinks machine at work - I hereby pledge to bring my own glass/cup to fill this week!
ReplyDeleteAngie
It's a great idea. We should be encouraging the big chains like Starbucks and Costa to knock a few pence/cents off the price if you bring your own cup! Here in the UK we are finally seeing a reduction in plastic carrier bags being used with the supermarkets giving reward points if you bring your own.

Hey guess what. I just emailed a big coffee chain and suggested just that... we'll see what happens!
ReplyDeleteI try to use only re-usable items for food & drink. I bought a Sigg bottle (http://mysigg.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=45) a while back and I use it whenever I need. As for coffee, I'd rather sit and drink it instead of taking it ToGo, so I don't buy coffee in a paper cup :)
ReplyDeleteI blogged about it :)

This is wonderful Cyndi, thanks so much for suggesting it! I already use my own containers when I go out, for water and coffee, but spreading the word so others can learn only helps us all!

Great challenge - I have brought my own mug to work as a replacement for paper cups, but I haven't extended it to ALL paper/plastic cups I encounter. God willing, I will succeed on this week's challenge.
ReplyDeleteHere is my post! http://dementiafor2.blogspot.com/2010/01/little-greener-me.html
ReplyDeleteSorry, I went a little overboard with it. I just couldn't seem to stop myself!
This challenge speaks to my Coffee Cup Love!.
ReplyDelete* Thrift store stainless-steel mugs are cheap and plentiful!
* Often disposable cups can be reused
* Most paper cups can be composted!
(Inge' - I loved your post, especially about the 'refills' ;-)
Great challenge! I posted my write up, where I admit to faltering this week. Oops! http://whatacard.blogspot.com/2010/01/reusable-cups.html
ReplyDeleteIt was great to see an area where I can easily improve!
GREAT Challenge! I've been away for a week in London but thankfully I always 'sat down' to eat and drink so every piece of cutlery and tablewear was washable and reusable! Keep my own cup at calligraphy class too... I know kids take reusable lunch boxes and drink bottles to school in Australia (at least at my nephews' school) and kids in France eat at the canteen with 'real' plates and cutlery... This is a great reminder for us that it's also much healthier to SIT and Eat than eat on the run. With picnic season coming up - it's so much lovelier to eat off real plates and drink out of real glasses too...
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge. It really made me think about how I make choices and what I can do to make better choices. I wrote about my week at http://thehandmadeandnaturallife.blogspot.com/2010/01/change-world-wednesday.html
ReplyDeleteI just joined your blog as I am always looking for ways to protect Gaia. I already take in a cup to refill as I always feel so guilty when I throw them away,
ReplyDeleteMillenniumhealth
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge - anything that helps cut down on plastics gets my vote.
I luckily don't live where we have fast food or a problem with plastic drink or food containers but next week I have to take a couple of flights so I will take my own food and buy water in a glass bottle - which always tastes better anyway!
