Welcome to Change The World Wednesday (CTWW). If you are new here, please click on the tab at the top of the page ... you'll find rules, tips and a list of all our challenges.
So ... how did you do with last week's challenge? For me it was an exercise in awareness ... I made an effort to really pay attention to how much toothpaste I was using. And, I tried to reduce it to the bare minimum. My teeth got clean and my tube of toothpaste should last a lot longer. Thanks, again, to our friend Argentum Vulgaris for giving us the inspiration for that challenge. Let's see how our Honor Society did:
The following twitter friends talked about our challenge using the hashtag #ctww (these are definitely great folks to follow if you're a twitter member):
@whopaysthepiper
@TheNewAuthor
@faerymoongodess
Our friend Ann dropped in. She has been a long time supporter of CTWW and includes our banner each week in a post. Last week she was talking about Vegetable Crisp Bags ... a small thing that has the power to change the world. You can read her post HERE. Thanks, Ann!
Another long-time supporter of our challenges is EcoGrrl. EcoGrrl took the challenge and suggests that we look for all natural toothpastes. She shared a great thought: "One thing my dental hygienist said to me - don't put any toothpaste in your mouth that you would be afraid to eat. A little dramatic, but think about it - you are ingesting a little of it each day."
Argentum Vulgaris is another steadfast supporter of CTWW. He wrote about our challenge HERE and also wrote a very important (and scary) post HERE about fluoride and it's dangers. I hope you'll take the time to read both of his posts. And yes, AV, you may go out and play! :)
Courtney is a new member of our CTWW Honor Society. She's going to watch the amount she uses and ... she says "no" to fluoride. If you like giveaways, then you'll want to check out her blog called Crunchy Beach Mama. Thanks, Courtney, for dropping in and joining us.
Another "newbie" to our challenges is Shauna who hosts a blog called Trying to Stay Calm. Shauna also hosts giveways ... lots of fun giveaways. Thanks, Shauna, for stopping by.
Jacqie, another "newbie", came by. Nice to see you, Jacqie! Jacqie has a blog called Tales of the Wife ... it's a wonderful site full of good information. She's also one of the hosts of the Wednesday Green Blog Hop (which you'll find in my sidebar each Wednesday). So check it out ... lots of green blogs to wander through.
Another long-time supporter is Krys from Two Vegan Boys Weblog. Two Vegan Boys is one of my favorite sites ... it's full of mouth-watering pictures and recipe ideas. I get hungry every time I visit Krys and the boys! Thanks for dropping in, Krys!
Manhattan Air Conditioning Service is a new arrival to our challenges. In Manhattan's words "The environment is polluted and there is too much that is heading unnecessary fr the bin." I couldn't agree more! By the way, if you need professional vent cleaning, check out Manhattan Air Conditioning Service.
Thanks to everyone who came by. And, as a reminder, if you wrote a post in support of our Change The World Wednesday challenge, it's being Stumbled and Tweeted.
Okay ... are you ready for a new challenge? This week we're going to go back to a previous challenge because ... well ... I'm still seeing plastic bags everywhere. So, here you go:
For the entire week (yep, the whole week), refuse plastic bags at the store or anywhere else where they are offered. One whole week ... 7 days ... no plastic bags.
OR ... If you're already "plastic bag free" ... then, within the next 7 days write a detailed post (or email, letter, etc.) on why plastic bags are bad for the environment.
Okay ... all together now:
WE'RE CHANGING THE WORLD ... ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME!
Thanks, everyone!

Bad: plastic is a petroleum product. oil = bad.
ReplyDeleteBad: plastic doesn't degrade and doesn't recycle to the same level of plastic (can't make a plastic bag from a plastic bag).
How to avoid plastic besides what we all know about the reusable shopping bag:
- Remember to use aforementioned bag when shopping for NON-food items too!! The mall!!!!
- You don't need plastic bags for most produce! It will not protect your apple whatsoever! Use a reusable non-plastic produce bag, or recyclable paper bag, for items like greens and mushrooms that need to be contained.
- Buying in bulk? Bring the bin/bottle with you, weigh it, and mark the weight on the container so the cashier can deduct it at the checkout. No bag needed and it's ready to put on the shelf when you get home (psst! spices - the best best BEST thing to get in the bulk aisle, insanely cheaper doing it this way!!)
Thanks! :)

Oh boy..I just found and followed your blog via the Green Blog Hop and I can tell I'm going to love it. I love the CTWW and know I'll be working on participating every week.
ReplyDeleteI already use reusable bags 85% of the time. I try to be at 100% but I'm known to forget (or not put bags in Husbands car). I'll be working on a post for later this week for my blog.
I found you on Green Blog Hop and now follow you on GFC-great blog! I will can definitely relate! I use reusable bags ALL the time and sell them on my store-www.mybabysgreen.com :)
ReplyDeletePlease follow my blog too! www.mybabysgreen.com
Great post! New follower from Green Blog Hop. :-) I can be found at http://peasloveandcamelot.wordpress.com
ReplyDeleteComing over from the blog hop. Your blog is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteCyndi...OMG!!! That garbanzo curry recipe!!! I could eat that every day!
ReplyDeletePlastic bags. Our family has been totally off plastic bags for 3 years.
And still, checkout people act perplexed.
I think Ecogirl covered all the top reasons...
But my canvas bags are the prettiest, coolest way to carry purchases. Plus, nobody knows what you bought, or where you bought it. Thanks Cyndi :o)

I'm following you from the Green Blog Hop - great site! Follow me back if you would like: http://sprout5.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteAbout this post - plastic bags not only are dependent on petroleum for their creation, they do not give back to the earth! (do not degrade!) We avoid plastic bags as much as possible EVERY day by always carrying around canvas or those great reusable bags that fold up into a tiny pouch and fit in any bag or purse!
Aw. Thank you! This is a great list of people to follow. =)
ReplyDeleteJacqie
Thank you so much. What a great list of people. Love your site!

ReplyDeleteIt is breast awareness month.
Following you back from the green blog hop on Wednesday (I'm a bit behind!). :) Love the challenge! I'm mostly plastic bag free, but I could do better. This week I will, thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteHey girl! I am actually going to blog tonight and and will bring up the plastic bag thing.
ReplyDeleteI am also going to talk about some other projects that I am working on with reguards to some recycled products.

Oh, I hope to visit your links - I try to use Sundays as "blog walk" days :-)
ReplyDeleteI felt so bad - over the last week I have forgotten my canvas bags when I went into the drug store and another store ... as I exited with my plastic bags, I was fuming at myself - for the canvas bags were in my car and I didn't want to hold up the line to say "wait..." - but I should have put down my things and retrieved the bags before checkout -- so, bad kat! But, I will do better . . . we use them at the grocery all the time - so why not remember always at the drug store or Target or whatever!
Most organic shops here keep the cardboard boxes that their stocks are delivered in for customer use in taking their purchases home. Better for the veges too as they don't sweat!! Only back briefly. Off to start an ethical art project in India... Got a 'chippy' French recycled giveaway happening - it's all ecological ;-)
ReplyDeletexxx Pleased to see you're still going strong

I'm so happy CTWW is cranking up again. I love having something positive to blog about every week!
ReplyDeleteWe're fortunate in that we discovered several advantages of always having bags with us when we shop. What I hadn't anticipated when starting this habit is that often the bags have a story, which inspired the marginally on-point Bag It, Bread It, Blog It!
great challenge. We haven't used carrier bags for over 2 years, so I wrote a little about why they are bad. http://littlegreenblog.com/green-home/reduce-reuse-recycle-green-home/whats-so-bad-about-plastic-bags/
ReplyDeleteLovely to have the challenges in full swing again :)
I finally got around to posting something about plastic bags today.
ReplyDeleteI used produce bags to buy nuts and dried fruit this past weekend..they worked great and I was so happy I didn't have to use plastic bags.
