#CTWW - Daily Challenge for 3/20/11

Happy first day of spring, everyone! Here's your challenge:

Turn off all of your electronic devices and unplug them. Turn your cell phone off. Sit in silence. Consider your day to day choices which affect the environment and climate change.

Until tomorrow ...

WE'RE CHANGING THE WORLD ... ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME!

  1. Great ideas! We always have our toaster, coffee maker, my husbands razor stuff like that unplugged. he laughs because now it has become such a natural habit that I unplug the coffee maker right after the coffee is made.

I am starting to more and more turn off my cell phone. Especially as home. I figure if someone has an emergency my husband has his phone. There is some great feeling about being able to disconnect from technology that I love!

  2. for the whole day? hmm.

i watched 'no impact man' the other night and his last phase of his project included going without electricity at home and it was really interesting. like his wife said, they became so much more outdoorsy than they ever had imagined because there was no reason to be indoors (tv, etc.).

this week i turned off my furnace, yippee! house is now always at least 60 degrees all on its own - and i even opened some windows yesterday to air out the house for a bit (we oregonians get excited at weather in the upper 50's!).

while i can't turn my phone off for the day, i can appreciate less of a connection to technology. i've been almost 2 months off of my personal facebook page and it's great - the only time i come online for the most part is to a) duh, blog, and b) check my neighborhood page to see what's going on in my community. i work online all day long so it's nice to disconnect at home...

  3. This challenge helped me realize that one of the things I like about gardening is that it is very very different from my internet work. I suppose I could bring a radio to it but I absolutely won't. Getting away from all the electronic noise is part of the fun or spiritual exercise or whatever it is about gardening. And the disaster in Japan reminds us (if we needed it) that electricity has to come from someplace, and that someplace has costs.
