#CTWW - Daily Challenge for 3/24/11

Here's today's challenge:

Dry your clothes on a clothes line instead of in an electric drier. Electric driers use up to 10% of residential electricity in the United States. The average household can save more than $100 a year by forgoing the electric clothes dryer and using a clothesline. Clothes dried in the fresh air smell better, too! Some say that you can soften your towels and prevent them from drying stiff on the line by adding a ½ cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle.

WE'RE CHANGING THE WORLD ... ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME!

  1. I love this idea and can see our dogs running through the yard with "clean" laundry in their mouths. You did say it would be a challenge though!?!

  2. I used to do this when I had a tree in my yard but without the tree it's harder to string one up and I can't afford one of those collapsible ones for the yard right now. Any creative ideas out there for building one? My basement is too humid for hanging things down there so haven't figured out what to do in the rainy/cold seasons...

  3. EcoGrrl - Could you hang up a couple lines in your bathroom? Could be in the way, but it might work.

I linked to a post I did earlier this year about how I hung up two lines in my existing laundry room. I've been using both of these a lot since I hung them, I love it!

  4. My family has been doing this since I was a little girl!!!! So naturally, I continued into my adult life. I love hanging my clothes outside in the fresh air. During the winter months, we have a metal clothes hanger that we use inside, the clothes take a little bit longer to dry but it's worth it.

I am going to try the white vinegar tip! Thanks!

  6. OH yeah! This isn't much of a challenge for us, we already do it! But I always tell fellow diaper mamas to line-dry! Next step... hand-washing! AhhH!

  7. I do some line drying in the house, but we live in a very wooded area not far from a swampy pond, and have tons of ticks and mosquitoes in the yard in the spring/summer--I feel like my clothes would get buggy if I hung them outside. Am I just being crazy? Does anyone line dry outside in an area with lots of ticks and mosquitoes?
