Today's challenge is up:
Reduce your use of household cleaning products, soaps, shampoos, hair care products and other items which contain chemicals. Replace them with products which are biodegradable. Carcinogenic chemicals in deodorants, soaps, shampoos, and body sprays persist in the environment, build up in the food chain and return to haunt us long after they've gone down the drain. See http://www.greenlisted.org/personal-care.htm, www.originalmoxie.com and http://www.greenlisted.org/cleaning-products.htm to learn about eco-friendly products.
See you tomorrow ...
WE'RE CHANGING THE WORLD ... ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME!
Hmmmph! Got no hair, so I don't need shampoo...
ReplyDeleteActually, just got round to posting on the challeneg of the 25th elaborating on an idea already suggested, but an older solution.

Can't Tweet it at the moment, not on my machine, but when i get home later.

This is actually my challenge for April! We do a pretty good job at making sure all of our cleaning products are toxin-free and eco-friendly! I know that we could do a lot more! Especially with my make-up. Thank you for posting this!

I have been making progress in this area for a while, but still more to do. I posted my homemade green cleaners a while ago:

I'm new here so I'm not sure this counts - does it have to be a new post specifically on this subject?
I'm also in the middle of a Spring Cleaning Series - Bathrooms are next. Tackling this question as I clean out and see what is left to convert. Definitely the makeup!
Hi Greening ... so happy that you've joined us ... love your comments.
ReplyDeleteYep, old posts count ... anything that helps us spread the word and learn.
Thanks, again ... headed over to read your post right now! :-)
Haven't gotten around to making my own cleaners 100% but this is all I have:
ReplyDelete* Shampoo & Conditioner by Nature's Gate, bought in bulk (no packaging in 2 yrs!)
* Local bar soap (won't buy it if it comes in packaging)
* Biokleen dish & laundry powders bought in bulk (stored in tupperware - no packaging, yay!)
* Bon Ami for cleaning the toilet!
Recently -and finally- cleaned the crud out of the bottom of my gas range with a baking powder/water paste and it all came off no problem (and let me tell you it was hardcore...). Baking powder also bought in bulk works wonders in SO many ways - dreamy :)
I LOVE Biokleen! There is only one place about 30 mins from me that sells it in bulk, but it's the liquid. I really like the powder - might have to try just to reduce the packaging. Not much around here comes in bulk :(
ReplyDeleteBaking soda is awesome!!!! Did a post recently on it:

If you need to clean your coffee maker - forget vinegar! Baking soda is the way to go!
Trying to be <a href="http://rewinn.blogspot.com/2011/03/todays-change-world-wedneday-lenten.html>Clean and Green</a>, I've had good luck with Biogreen Clean. But good old white vinegar is also great!
ReplyDeleteDo we need deodorants and body sprays? I haven't used them except when I was in my early 20s.
ReplyDeleteI already do a lot of this but I usually do not buy products that are green because they cost more.
ReplyDeleteI use vinegar to wash windows and get rid of mineral deposits from hard water. I use hydrogen peroxide to take out stains from clothing and carpeting. I use baking soda to scrub bathtub and sink.
These are just the ones I can think of in a hurry.
