Here's today's challenge:
Reduce your use of household cleaning products, soaps, shampoos, hair care products and other items which contain chemicals. Replace them with products which are biodegradable. Carcinogenic chemicals in deodorants, soaps, shampoos, and body sprays persist in the environment, build up in the food chain and return to haunt us long after they've gone down the drain. See http://www.greenlisted.org/personal-care.htm, www.originalmoxie.com and http://www.greenlisted.org/cleaning-products.htm to learn about eco-friendly products.
Until tomorrow ...
WE'RE CHANGING THE WORLD ... ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME!
Body sprays - never understood! I buy my shampoo, conditioner & body lotion in the bulk aisle, refilling the same bottles for a couple years now. My next step is to move from plastic to glass but the shower makes me a bit paranoid as I'm klutzy :)
ReplyDeleteEcoGrrl - I am so envious that you can buy shampoo, conditioner and lotion in bulk! I have never seen that MA.
ReplyDeleteI switched to homemade cleaners a few years ago - so easy and cheap! This is what I use in the kitchen and bathroom: http://thegreeningofwestford.blogspot.com/2011/01/homemade-green-cleaners-made-easy.html
I have been using GoodGuide.com a lot lately. They have an app that lets you scan the bar code and instantly see its rating 9if in the database). Very handy since I often have a hard time actually finding in stores what I have looked up as safe.
Still working on finding a deodorant that works. Any suggestions?
@EcoGrrl - just a thought ... what if you got some stainless steel containers for your bath products? Of course, one couldn't see the product inside but the container could be labeled ... or different sized or colored containers could represent different contents. I'd be worried about glass in the shower, too! :-)
ReplyDelete@Greening - have you tried the natural crystal deodorants? Or ... alum? I bought some alum "rocks" from a Mexican store and I just take one, wet it and rub it on. It doesn't prevent moisture from sweat but does prevent any odor. Moisture doesn't bother me ... it is, after all, natures way of cooling us off. I believe the commercial crystal deodorants are made with alum. I've seen them at stores with natural products (like Whole Foods, Earth Fare, etc.). Hope that helps! :-)
I have not bought anything toxic for almost one year. It was hard to get my husband to switch to all natural shaving cream, but we tried a few until he found one he liked. I buy all natural soap and have even started using it on my hair (I also use baking soda and ACV).
ReplyDelete@EcoGrrl - Installed GoodGuide. Thank you!!!
@EcoGrrl - I have been using Bubble and Bee Super Pit Putty and it works pretty well. I do find that at work, I have to reapply several times, but it does cover up the smell. I also use Moody Sisters Powder Deodorant.
