Our featured blog, Briogeo, is associated with Briogeo Hair Products. Before telling you a bit about the blog, let me share what I've learned about the company. Their products are made in the USA. According to the FAQ page, their products "contain a high content of natural and naturally-derived ingredients". I've randomly clicked on various products and the ingredients are listed for each one, allowing customers to conduct their own research on the safety of the item. Products are never tested on animals. All of their packaging contains at least 25% post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. The blog is interesting. I found an article entitled A Look at Deep Conditioning: Why it’s necessary for all hair types. Most people know that things like the sun, chlorine, and coloring can stress out our tresses, but did you know that taking certain medications can also affect your hair? The article goes on to talk about natural ingredients and how to perform a deep conditioning. Another post, Long Days of Summer discusses keeping long hair healthy during hot weather. While I would like to see a bit more information on products and treatments which are both Eco-friendly and safe to use, I feel that Briogeo introduces topics which make me think about the connection between personal care products, fashion, and the environment. Did you know that conventionally-grown, non-organic sweet potatoes are part of the "The Fab 14" or that 5-digit PLU codes beginning with 8 signify genetically modified produce? That information is part of Tips for saving money at the grocery store. In another post, 6 surprising symptoms of dehydration, I learned that craving sugar could point to dehydration. Our featured site this week, The Daily Green which is associated with Favor the Earth, is full of interesting content. Favor the Earth is a business selling organic and Eco-friendly products. One might expect their blog to be a "sales pitch" and while they do point to their sales page as a path to finding safe products, the focus is on education. For example, in an article entitled 5 ingredients to avoid in snacks carrageenan is mentioned because it can cause intestinal distress. The post ends with a promotional offer on snacks which are safe and healthy. In another piece, I learned that inexpensive clothing can come at a high environmental and humanitarian cost ... in 2005, two thousand garment workers died in work related fires and building collapses. Again, the author doesn't leave us shaking our heads, feeling powerless ... we are directed to a company producing ethical, made-in-the-US clothing. The Daily Green will open your eyes and give you the facts necessary to make good choices. Whether you are looking for planet-friendly products or information about green living, you'll find it on this blog.

I'm so happy that random.org chose EcoGrrl for our feature this week ... she's one smart, environmentally-conscious woman! I've followed her blog for a long time and it's always been great. But in the last couple of years, she has kicked up her efforts even further and created a site full of interesting, pertinent information. For example, the EcoGrrl Interviews feature people from all over the world who share a passion for living green. EcoGrrl's questions aren't run of the mill ... she asks thoughtful, and thought-provoking, questions like "What do you turn to when you need strength?" and "In what environment(s) do you feel most in your element?" Across the top of the blog, readers will find various topics like Books I Adore, Wellness and In My Garden. Each collection of articles is well written with an honesty that readers have come to expect from EcoGrrl. She questions everything and challenges us to consider all sides of an issue, never assuming that the accepted or popular thoughts on a subject are correct. There's one section of EcoGrrl's blog entitled "9-to-5" ... the posts in this section are all about careers. So how does that work into green living? Well, EcoGrrl started her own business, about 14 months ago, as a recruiting consultant. She takes her passion for sustainability and applies it to her work, building relationships with (and for) her clients ... relationships which contribute to a strong community ... and as we all know, a strong community is a key factor to helping our earth. Please meet Lisa, owner and author of The Squishable Baby. I've often said that living green is simply the right thing to do and that it requires education, thought and action. Lisa epitomizes that philosophy. She researches information, develops a plan and takes action. For example, in a recent post entitled Making A Compost Bin she decided that it was time for her family to incorporate this strategy into their "green" routine. She researched the idea for quite awhile and came to the conclusion that the easiest method was the best. With minimal money spent on a few materials, she easily made a compost bin and got started. Her plan included what they would put into the bin and how each family member would contribute to composting success. That's typical of how Lisa approaches an Eco-friendly life. Here are a few things you may not know about Lisa ... she was formally trained in the field of Molecular and Cellular Biology, she holds a wedding planning and coordination certification from Weddings Beautiful International, and she makes and sells merino wool and bamboo pants for babies. Such an interesting woman!! I am not a parent. But, I've visited enough blogs to know that choosing safe, Eco-friendly products for children is often a real challenge. EcoFriendly Baby Products helps meet that challenge by offering clothing, toys, bottles, strollers, etc. which are safe for your child and the environment. Each item comes with an "Eco Cred" ... a list of reasons why the product is considered "green". The "Product Details" section offers information about how the item can be used, whether it's machine washable, what others have said about it, etc. It's a great site for those with children or those who buy gifts for children. Most of us live green because we care about the planet. Along the way, we might realize other, personal benefits. For example, we save money as we reduce consumption, our indoor air is better as we remove toxins, and we enjoy better nutrition by opting for local, organic foods. But what if we could live green and, in doing so, help local schools? The Greening of Westford's Kristina does exactly that. She is the founder of Upcycle It, a program which diverts non-recyclable items, like chip bags and granola bar wrappers, from landfills to a company called TerraCycle where they are turned into useable items. TerraCycle pays Upcycle It two cents per item (as well as all shipping costs). This money is then given to the Westford school system in the form of grants awarded for environmental programs. Wow ... save the environment, help schools financially and support environmental programs for the next generation. Win - Win - Win! The Greening of Westford also offers readers great information for our day to day lives. I found an article about using citrus peels to create an infused vinegar ... and another with 15 tips for "greening" our laundry. Last week we opened our link-up to include social networks. Random.org chose one of my favorite Pinterest pages, Kristina @ The Greening Of Westford. Pinterest, for those who are unfamiliar with the site, allows users to create and manage theme-based photos. Each photo is linked to the website where it was originally posted and usually includes an article with more information. Kristina has 64 boards (aka themes) including DIY Cleaners, Upcycling, Easy Eco Tips, and even a board of Kristina's recommended films with important movies like Unacceptable Levels: A Film About the Chemicals in Our Bodies and How They Got There, Vegucated and The World According to Monsanto. I found recipes (vegetarian, smoothies, poultry, etc.), DIY cough syrup, and information on recycling "weird" items (worn-out flip flops, wine corks and dentures). A visually stunning page, Kristina @ The Greening Of Westford offers readers a wealth of green information. One word of caution: plan to spend some time when you visit ... it's just that good!
